Thousands of Canadian-made window blinds and shades have been recalled because they pose a strangulation hazard to young children. The recall, published by Health Canada Wednesday, covers five made-to-order Prime Custom Blinds products, equipped with a chain and cord shield. The affected items include blackout shades, solar shades and alternating fabric blinds sold in a variety of sizes, fabrics and colours. According to Health Canada, the products do not meet the federal Corded Window Coverings Regulations, adding looped cords can become wrapped around a child’s neck or cause entanglement, creating a risk of strangulation that could result in serious injury or death. The recall said “consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products and contact the company to obtain a repair kit” According to the recall, Prime Custom Blinds reported that about 6,500 affected units were sold in Canada between December 2019 and July 2026. As of July 14, the company said it had received no reports of incidents or injuries related to the recalled products in Canada. “Health Canada recommends cordless window coverings,” the recall said, adding that more information on the hazard is available on the department’s Window Covering Safety webpage. Consumers can contact Prime Custom Blinds at 514-552-1026, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET or by email at info@pcblinds.com to obtain a repair kit. Health Canada also reminded consumers that recalled products cannot legally be resold, redistributed or given away in Canada under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. Consumers who experience a health or safety incident involving the recalled products are encouraged to report it through Health Canada’s Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
