Water flooding onto Nestaweya River Trail could lead to closure within the week

A portion of the Nestaweya River Trail is closing to allow work on the Forks Rail Bridge.

It may be the last week to skate on the Nestaweya River Trail this winter.

A spokesperson for The Forks told CTV News Monday that water levels are rising and it’s causing some flooding on the ice.

The flooding may lead to the closure in the next week.

“But if the Nestaweya River Trail closes, there is still the Canopy Rink and the Upper Trails for skating, until Mother Nature decides to take that out of our hands as well,” the spokesperson said.

This comes as The Forks announced portions of the River Trail are already closed as maintenance work is starting on the Rail Bridge.

The entire Red River portion has been closed off for the work.

“This work includes removing the steel framing that housed the bridge counterweight system. Completing the work while the ice remains stable provides a safe and practical window for crews ahead of the spring thaw,” The Forks said in a news release.

The Assiniboine River section of the trail remains open at this time.
