‘The job’s not done’: Manitoba premier says landfill search to continue

Premier Wab Kinew said the search of the Prairie Green Landfill will continue after the remains of a murdered Indigenous woman were identified last week.

Premier Wab Kinew said the search of a landfill outside of Winnipeg will continue after the remains of an Indigenous woman were identified last week.

On Friday, the province confirmed that human remains recovered on Feb. 26 at the Prairie Green Landfill belonged to Morgan Harris, 39. A second set of remains was also found and is undergoing testing to determine identity.

Crews have been searching the landfill since December 2024 for the remains of Harris and Marcedes Myran. The location of the remains of unidentified woman Indigenous elders have named Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe, or Buffalo Woman, are unknown.

“The job’s not done; we have the Myran family that we want to move forward with their closure and their healing,” Kinew said during a Monday afternoon media availability. “We’re going to keep working on that.

“So, for the time being, the search continues.”

Kinew said the cost of the landfill search project right now is “under budget,” but did not provide details of how much it has cost. He said in recent weeks, the government has received daily updates on the progress of the search.

Jeremy Skibicki was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Harris, Myran, the unidentified woman and Rebecca Contois, whose remains were found in a Winnipeg’s Brady Road landfill.
