Thousands of families gathered at Assiniboine Park on Sunday for the 36th annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic, hosted by the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. The day-long celebration offered children a chance to bring their teddy bears and stuffed animals to the Dr. Goodbear Clinic, where real doctors and nurses helped “diagnose” and treat the toys. The goal of the event was to make health care less intimidating and more familiar for young patients. “When a child hands over their teddy bear to a health care professional, they’re learning to trust,” said Stefano Grande, president and CEO of the foundation. “It’s a safe, friendly way to introduce kids to the hospital experience.” The event featured more than 20 activity tents, including face painting, crafts, science experiments and live performances. Children could take their teddy bears through mock triage, X-rays and bandaging stations, while volunteers guided them through each step. Grande said over 1,000 volunteers helped make the event possible. “They set up, supported families throughout the day, and will be here long after the crowds leave,” he said. The picnic also raised funds for pediatric research and hospital programs. Families shared stories about their teddy bears - some had fallen from trees, others had been in imaginary car accidents, offering a glimpse into how children process health and healing through play. Grande emphasized the importance of slowing down and spending time together. “It’s a day to celebrate kids, families and the role health care plays in our lives,” he said. As the event wrapped up, Grande offered a message to young attendees. “Thank you for being part of our hospital experience. We hope you went home with a smile, dreaming about Doctor Goodbear.”
