Tannis Richardson, a renowned Winnipeg philanthropist, has died at the age of 99

Tannis M. Richardson, a committed philanthropist and volunteer, has died at age 99.

James Richardson and Sons, Limited announced Richardson’s passing in a news release on Tuesday, describing her as an accomplished volunteer, champion of arts and culture, and community leader.

Throughout her life, Richardson held numerous board appointments and volunteer leadership positions. This includes work with the Kidney Foundation of Canada, International Society for Heart Research, United Way, Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Of note, was her commitment to juvenile diabetes – work that began after her oldest daughter was diagnosed with the disease. Her work included positions with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Canada and the creation of JD Manitoba’s ‘A Starry Starry Night’ fundraiser.

Richardson was the first-ever recipient of the Health Sciences Centre Foundation ‘Laureate of Excellence Award,’ as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s ‘One Step Closer Award.’ She was also named a member of the Order of Canada in 2003.

Richardson and Sons described her as a “proud patron and supporter of local arts groups,” noting she was instrumental in the development of the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Richardson was also accomplished in horseback riding, golf and tennis, and published her autobiography ‘Vignettes from My Life’ in 2020.

Richardson, who was born in Winnipeg in 1926, married George Richardson in 1948. Together they had four children, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
