Sled Penner, Dancing Blade and I Grate Winnipeg among proposed names for new snowplow fleet

Winnipeggers can now vote on their favourite names for the city’s plow fleet until the end of the year.

The final list of names in the running for Winnipeg’s fleet of snowplows and graders has been unveiled.

The idea, proposed by Mayor Scott Gillingham, resulted in 51 names being selected by the city. Those will be put to a public vote, with the top 12 being bestowed on the city’s six loaders and six grading machines.

Several names ware puns on local athletes, including Melt Stegall, Grady Oliveira, and Mark Shovele.

Other notable Winnipeg names - Dancing Blade, Sled Penner, Bob Plow-denkirk and even the mayor himself - Scott Chillingham.

Other names selected for the vote include “I Grate Winnipeg,” a reference to the song “One Great City!” by The Weakerthans and “That’ll do Peg,” – a play on the famous line from the 1995 film “Babe.”

The full list can be voted on online until Dec. 31.

The 12 winners will be invited to a special announcement in the new year, where they’ll receive a custom nameplate as a keepsake of their win.
