Man dead following weekend house fire: Winnipeg police

The body of an 81-year-old man was found following a weekend house fire in Winnipeg’s Lord Roberts neighbourhood.

An 81-year-old man has died following a weekend house fire in the city’s Lord Roberts neighbourhood.

According to Winnipeg police, officers and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were called to a home in the 600 block of Nassau Street South shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday. Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the home when crews arrived.

Firefighters tried to enter the house to battle the blaze, but worsening conditions forced them to retreat and fight the fire from outside. After three hours, the fire was declared under control. The house was considered a complete loss.

At the time, WFPS said one person in the house was unaccounted for.

A demolition of the house was ordered, and an 81-year-old man was found dead inside one of the rooms. Notifications have been made to family members.

The major crimes unit is investigating, and currently, the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
