A former ferry that once carried thousands of passengers to and from Pelee Island is now up for sale. The Ontario government has listed the M.V. Jiimaan in a sealed bid auction, with offers due by June 17. The 64-metre vessel was built in 1992 and served as a key transportation link between the mainland and Pelee Island for decades before being retired in 2019. During its years in operation, the Jiimaan could carry roughly 385 passengers and 34 vehicles per trip. It was replaced by the newer Pelee Islander II and has since remained docked in Sarnia. According to the Ministry of Transportation, the vessel is being sold on an “as-is, where-is” basis and is not represented as being in seaworthy condition. No asking price has been publicly disclosed.
