Royal Winnipeg Ballet announces new artistic director

Christopher Stowell will be steering the Royal Winnipeg Ballet forward as its new artistic director.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) has announced Christopher Stowell, an internationally recognized leader with decades of experience in ballet, as its new artistic director.

Stowell, whose appointment comes following a nine-month international search, brings a new vision to the dance company, with a commitment to community, inclusivity, and creativity.

“As a teenage ballet student in Seattle, I eagerly looked forward to the RWB’s visits, a company of vibrant and unique artists with a rich and eclectic repertoire, every performance full of discoveries. I can’t believe my good fortune at now taking on the artistic leadership of this Canadian gem,” he said in a news release.

“With 85 years of impact across the globe and a future full of promise, I see the RWB expanding its reach, inspiring and guiding new generations of dancers and dance enthusiasts, telling new stories, and strengthening its reputation as a welcoming hub of creativity for all.”

Stowell’s parents are ballet legends Kent Stowell and Francia Russell.

During his career, Stowell danced with the San Francisco Ballet for 16 years. He also worked as the artistic director for the Oregon Ballet Theatre, the assistant to the artistic director of the San Francisco Ballet, and the associate artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada.

Stowell has taught and coached across the globe, created his own works for several ballets, and served as a juror for international competitions.

André Lewis, who has been the RWB’s artistic director since 1996, said he was hopeful the board would appoint someone who understood the importance of the job.

“I can leave knowing that Stowell acknowledges our deep history and commitment to bringing the joy of dance to our communities and inspiring innovation for future generations of patrons and dancers,” he said in a news release.

“I know that I will be able to watch with pride as he shapes the next artistic chapter of the RWB.”

Stowell begins in June 2025.
