50 mm of rain expected in parts of Manitoba this weekend

A rainfall warning is in effect for parts of southern Manitoba ahead of an expected drenching this weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued the alert for much of south-central and southeast Manitoba, including Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, Pinawa, Gimli and Lac du Bonnet.

The weather agency said a warm front lifting northward into Canada will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to southern Manitoba Friday night and into Saturday morning.

“Steadier and intensifying rain will begin late Saturday afternoon or early evening as the front stalls for the next day,” the warning said, adding rainfall will taper off Sunday afternoon when the front finally moves on into northwestern Ontario.

ECCC warned 50 millimetres could fall from late Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.

Weather officials advised the public to check for additional alerts as the weekend unfolds.
