Winnipeg police say an alleged abduction led to a police pursuit that resulted in a two-car crash on Broadway Avenue Friday that is now being investigated by the province’s police watchdog. According to a news release from Winnipeg police on Monday, officers received a 911 call at approximately 1:45 p.m. about a possible abduction at River Avenue and Donald Street. Police say the caller saw a man allegedly forcing a woman into a green vehicle, later reported to be a 2023 Ford Bronco, and leaving the area. Police say the Bronco was found in a parking lot in the 400 block of River Avenue. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver quickly drove away, hitting a parked vehicle, according to police. Officers began pursuing the Bronco, based on the information they had at the time. During the chase, the Bronco hit a Winnipeg police cruiser near Wellington Crescent, police say. At 1:57 p.m., the driver of the Bronco did not stop at a stop sign at Broadway Avenue and Langside Street, hitting a Mitsubishi Outlander going west on Broadway, police say. The Outlander hit a nearby building and the Bronco hit additional parked vehicles and became inoperable. The driver of the Bronco, an 18-year-old man, was arrested. The people in the other two vehicles were assessed by paramedics and taken to hospital. On Saturday, police learned one of the people in the Outlander suffered an injury deemed serious under the Police Services Act. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified and is now investigating.
