Oak Park, St. Norbert come out victorious in Winnipeg High School Football League

The top varsity teams in the Winnipeg High School Football League went head-to-head on Thursday in a pair of championships.

The top teams in Winnipeg high school varsity football went head-to-head in a pair of championship games at Princess Auto Stadium on Thursday.

The night began with the Triple A Currie Bowl as the St. Norbert Celtics beat the Dryden High Eagles 10-0.

Thursday’s victory marked the first time St. Norbert has won the cup.

St. Norbert head coach Adrian Huntley said he’s grateful for the community’s support.

“We’ve been to the finals a few times and it just didn’t play out for us in the cards, and tonight was our night,” he said.

The championships continued with the Oak Park Raiders coming out as the 2025 ANAVETS champions, denying the Dakota Lancers a three-peat victory.

The teams fought hard Thursday night for the Quad A championship title, with the Raiders ultimately beating the Lancers 22-17.

Oak Park’s head coach Chris Ollson said he’s “unbelievably proud” of the team, adding that the players showed “epic” resilience in the fourth quarter.

He added that every time Oak Park faces Dakota it comes down to the wire.

“I knew it was going to be a high blood pressure type of game, but I’m glad we’re on this side of it for once,” he said.

Tribute to Darius Hartshorne

The night also included a tribute to Darius Hartshorne, a teen athlete who sustained a neck injury during a Winnipeg high school football game in early October. The 17-year-old died on Oct. 29.

Gustafson Bowl

The Elmwood High School Giants triumphed over the West Kildonan Wolverines in the AAAA Varsity Gustafson Bowl.

Held at the Fort Garry Lions Football Club on Nov.10, Elmwood won 35 - 6 in the final match of the year.
