New technology equipping Winnipeg snow-clearing map with ‘near real-time’ updates

Improvements to a map tracking Winnipeg snow-clearing operations aim to make navigating the tool a smoother, quicker ride for users.

The city announced Tuesday its sidewalk-clearing equipment now has built-in automatic vehicle location technology, enabling updates to the city’s map every 15 minutes on individual sidewalk, pathway and bike path clearing.

Previously, staff entered this info manually for an entire area, the city noted, typically at the end of a 12-hour clearing shift.

“By using automatic vehicle location technology, we’re giving residents near real-time updates on snow-clearing progress so they can plan their trips safely and confidently,” Mayor Scott Gillingham said in the release.

Winnipeggers are reminded to check the map before reporting a missed clearing. If the road or path is blue, that means city crews are still working on clearing it.

Users can also pick different filters to see progress on routes for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
