Moose hunting season now open in Manitoba

Moose hunting season has officially opened in Manitoba.

Licensed hunters can officially hunt moose starting Monday, and the province said conservation officers will be deployed to ensure hunting regulations are followed and that there is access to game hunting areas.

This comes following a recent court decision in the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench allowing Bloodvein First Nation to keep a blockade up near their community.

The Manitoba Wildlife Federation had argued the blockade was intended to keep licensed moose hunters from entering the area, while the First Nation said the check stop was meant to keep the community safe from drugs and alcohol.

Bloodvein First Nation has agreed in writing it will allow licensed moose hunters to pass through the checkpoint.

The judge in the case noted there are currently three other proceedings before the courts regarding disputes between moose hunters and First Nations in Manitoba.

With moose hunting season getting underway, the province is reminding hunters they are required to hunt ethically, legally and safely during the season.

Hunters are required to carry a valid hunting licence and identification, wear hunter orange for visibility and not to trespass on private or restricted lands.

The province also advises hunters to be aware of chronic wasting disease, a condition that affects deer, elk and moose. Hunters active in areas where the illness is present should have hunted animals tested, practice safe carcass handling, and avoid consuming animals that have tested positive or haven’t been tested yet.

Illegal hunting and wastage can be reported to the Manitoba Conservation Officer Service by calling 1-800-782-0076.
