Manitoba weather: What to expect on Canada Day?

After severe thunderstorms left much of southern Manitoba soaked on Monday night, rain continues in parts of the region on Tuesday.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the southwest corner of the province was hardest hit Monday, with Boissevain receiving 152 millimetres (mm) of rainfall, followed by Deloraine and Minto with 129.8 mm and 113.3 mm, respectively.

Brandon received 43 to 67 mm of rainfall, while 27mm was recorded in Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, an ECCC rainfall warning (orange) continues for the Parkland region, including Dauphin, on Tuesday.

June has not been kind to the region, nor will the beginning of July.

The weather agency said 50 to120 mm of rain has fallen over portions of western Manitoba since Monday, with 15 to 50 mm expected Tuesday. It added that the heaviest rain is expected to fall from the Roblin to Dauphin areas.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the region on Canada Day.

The culprit for this drenching is a low pressure system that will be stalling over western and central Manitoba as it weakens, according to ECCC.

The weather agency said isolated or scattered thunderstorms are possible in southern and central regions on Tuesday.

There is a chance that Winnipeg could get clipped by showers falling further north this afternoon or evening, but the chance is low.

Canada Day in the city will bring a mix of sun and cloud and a daytime high near 24 C. If you are planning to celebrate at any outdoor events, be prepared for the possibility of showers or a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening.
