The Region of Waterloo and CUPE Local 1883 have reached a tentative agreement, averting a potential strike by approximately 850 frontline workers. The region announced the agreement early Saturday morning, a couple hours after the union was set to enter a legal strike position. Services will continue without interruption while union members vote on the tentative agreement in the coming days, the region said in a statement. The negotiations involved workers in several regional services, including public health, transit, libraries and housing. The union had previously said staffing levels and job security were major sticking points in negotiations. CUPE Local 1883 had also said members voted in favour of job action as negotiations continued. A provincial mediator was brought in to assist with negotiations. The terms of the tentative agreement have not been released. The agreement is subject to ratification by union members.
