Manitoba set to be hit with significant snowfall Tuesday evening

It is the calm before the storm on Tuesday afternoon.

A potent low pressure system in Montana is set to bring significant snowfall starting Tuesday evening.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a snowfall warning for southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg.

The weather agency said 15 to 25 cm of snowfall is expected, with 30 cm or more possible in higher terrain in the Parkland region.

ECCC said snow is expected to taper off on Thursday morning. Until then, road closures or utility outages are possible in the south, according to the weather agency.

Conditions should worsen first on Tuesday afternoon in the southwest. Several regions, including Brandon, are under a blowing snow advisory. Falling snow in strong east winds developing Tuesday afternoon could reduce visibility into the nighttime.

Areas in the southwest corner are also under a third alert – a freezing rain warning. Freezing rain could cause slippery conditions Tuesday afternoon before it transitions to snow in the evening.

Snow, which is expected to fall heavily at times, is expected to reach Winnipeg by mid- to late Tuesday evening.

Blowing snow will be a concern across the Red River Valley overnight and during the Wednesday morning commute. Anticipate challenging travel conditions. Highway closures aren’t certain but can’t be ruled out.
