Manitoba MP named to Carney’s cabinet

Newly elected MP Rebecca Chartrand is now the Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs for Canada.

A newly elected Manitoba MP will have a position in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet.

Rebecca Chartrand (Churchill–Keewatinook Aski) has been named minister of northern and Arctic affairs and minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.

The ministry has been split off from the previous Crown–Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs portfolio held by Gary Anandasangaree since December 2024.

Anandasangaree takes over as minister of public safety. Rebecca Alty is the new minister of Crown-Indigenous relations.

Chartrand won Churchill–Keewatinook Aski for the Liberals for the first time since 2008 in last month’s federal election.

She is the only Manitoba MP selected for cabinet.
