The chief of a northern Manitoba First Nations community says a lockdown is in place following a fatal shooting. Pimicikamak Cree Nation Chief David Monias said in a statement and video posted to social media Saturday morning that RCMP are investigating a “serious incident in our community involving gunfire” and one person has been confirmed dead. The shooter has not been arrested. RCMP confirmed to CTV News that they’re investigating a suspicious death in the community, but had no other details. More information would be shared once known. Monias’ post said due to the ongoing investigation, all events as part of Treaty and Indian Days, which were taking place over the weekend, have been cancelled until further notice and residents are advised to stay indoors. Residents are urged to lock their doors and windows, not allow children to play outside or wander around unsupervised and not open their doors to anyone they don’t know or trust. “Your safety is our top priority. This lockdown is a precautionary measure to protect every member of our community while police conduct their investigation,” the post reads. Residents are being asked to cooperate with law enforcement if they do come to their home and report suspicious activity to RCMP at 204-676-2345 or call 911 if it’s an emergency.
