A man has been hospitalized after accidentally igniting a fire in his car when he lit a cigarette in Vancouver’s Chinatown neighbourhood on Sunday, police said. The Vancouver Police Department said officers and firefighters from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services were called to the area of Pender and Carrall streets at around 11:34 p.m. Video obtained by CTV News shows a vehicle engulfed in flames and black smoke billowing into the night sky. “The driver of a sedan accidentally ignited fuel vapours inside the cabin from multiple stored jerry cans with a lit cigarette,” the VPD said. “Although the vehicle was quickly engulfed in flames, the driver managed to escape.” Police said the driver, a 38-year-old man, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Two vehicles parked nearby were damaged by the fire, and the VPD said investigators deemed the incident “entirely accidental.”
