Koats for Kids launches annual winter clothing drive to help Winnipeggers in need

Adam Manveiler returns with details on how your donations, big or small can keep Winnipeg kids warm throughout the winter

With colder temperatures on the horizon, Winnipeggers are being called on to dig into their closets for winter gear donations, all in the name of helping kids stay warm this winter.

Koats for Kids, an annual drive spearheaded by United Way Winnipeg, officially launched its 2025 donations push on Thursday.

According to the organization, Winnipeggers donate over 6,000 coats every year from September to January.

“What we want is for every child to have access to this warm winter wear so they can play in the snow and go to school safely and comfortably,” said United Way Winnipeg’s Adam Manveiler.

New or gently used coats, hats, waterproof mitts, scarves, ski pants, and boots are all needed.

Donations are now being accepted at a number of Access Storage locations, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services stations, Toys R Us locations, AMJ Campbell and YMCA of Winnipeg locations.

North Point Douglas Women’s Centre executive director Melissa Chung-Mowat said Koats for Kids donations are vital in helping to meet their community’s basic needs during Winnipeg’s punishing winters.

“For folks living on low incomes, it makes it really challenging to ensure that kids have warm enough clothing to get to school safely, to enjoy the outdoors,” she said.

“Knowing that they can come to our centre and knowing that they can access these things really does alleviate a lot of stress.”

There are more ways to help, as well.

Manitobans with knitting skills can craft neck warmers and scarves for elementary school kids. Instructions and patterns can be found on United Way Winnipeg’s website. (hyperlink)

Koats for Kids is also in need of volunteers 16 and over to help sort, organize and package up donations.
