How much rain fell in Manitoba during 36-hour deluge

The province was doused with a deluge of rain care of a Colorado low that moved into Manitoba this week.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the southwest Manitoba community of Rivers had the highest reported rainfall total, with 37.4 mm falling over the past 36 hours.

Minnedosa recorded 27.6 mm, Virden logged 24.2 mm, and Sprague followed closely with 24.1 mm of reported rainfall.

Most southwestern regions were drenched with anywhere from 13 mm to 17 mm, ECCC said.

Meanwhile, the weather reporting station at The Forks in Winnipeg received 12.1 mm, while the Winnipeg airport reported 8.7 mm.

The soaking was thanks to a Colorado low, ECCC said. Showers developed in southern Manitoba Thursday morning ahead of the low pressure system that brewed over the Northern Plains. It then tracked into southern portions of the province overnight Friday, intensifying rainfall and elevating thunderstorm risks.

The drenching isn’t finished just yet, the weather agency forecasts.

The low pressure system moved into the north on Friday and slowed its progression. Anywhere from 25 to 40 mm more rain could fall in that neck of the woods through to the end of Saturday, as the low continues to deepen on route to Hudson Bay.
