Highway 75 reopens, some schools closed due to winter conditions

High winds are causing blowing snow and prompting some yellow weather advisories in parts of Manitoba on Friday morning.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, an area extending south from the Interlake, to the U.S. border, including the City of Winnipeg is under a yellow advisory.

The advisory said blowing snow may reduce visibility on the highways to near zero at times. It further advises travel will likely be hazardous and road closures may be possible. An area northeast of Winnipeg, along the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg is also under a yellow advisory.

These advisories and poor driving conditions have prompted the following road closures, school closures and service disruptions. Manitoba 511 reports the closure of Provincial Hwy. 5 from PR357 to Sainte Rose du Lac and the closure of Provincial Hwy. 5 from Sainte Rose du Lac to Ochre River. Early Friday morning Highway 75 from Morris to the US border was closed but has reopened. The province did warn of blowing snow and drifts on stretches of the road.

The conditions have prompted the closure of all schools in the Red River Valley School Division, Turtle Mountain School Division, Prairie Rose School Division and the Fort la Bosse Division.

There are several closures in effect for the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine including the closure of St-Jean-Baptiste, Jours de Plaine (Laurier), École Aurèle-Lemoine (Saint-Laurent) and École Saint-Lazare. Buses in the division are cancelled on Friday for École Sainte-Agathe, École Réal-Bérard (St-Pierre), École Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, and École Gilbert-Rosset.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, weather conditions are expected to improve by Friday evening.
