Southern Manitoba to be hit by heavy snow this week

The mild winter weather is set to come to an abrupt end in southern Manitoba this week with heavy snow expected to blanket the region.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special weather statement for several communities on Monday morning, including Winnipeg, Brandon, Dauphin, Gimli, Portage la Prairie and Selkirk.

The weather agency warns a strong low pressure system is expected to bring 15 to 25 centimetres of snow, as well as poor visibility from blowing snow. It notes that freezing rain is also a possibility in the extreme southwest of the province.

ECCC adds the weather event is forecasted to begin on Tuesday evening and continue overnight on Wednesday into Thursday morning.

“Winter-like temperatures” are expected to return in the wake of the system.

Dangerous travel conditions are expected on Wednesday and Thursday.
