Handful of Manitoba communities smash heat records this week

An unseasonably warm January day helped a slew of Manitoba communities break decades-old heat records on Tuesday.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), temperatures soared above freezing and above previous record highs in nine communities.

One of the most sizable jumps happened in Grand Rapids, where the mercury reached 3.4 C on Tuesday, comfortably besting the previous record of 1.5 C set in 1987.

Similarly, Swan River recorded a high of 4.9 C – a nearly two degree leap from the previous record set in the Parkland town in 1989.

Conversely, The Pas barely eked out a new record at 2.5 C, just unseating the previous historic high of 2.2 C set in 1926.

Other communities that logged record-breaking temperatures include Altona, Fisher Branch, Gretna, Norway House, Roblin and Shoal Lake.
