Flin Flon residents on evacuation standby after wildfire jumps border

A wildfire is Saskatchewan has jumped the border, prompting the City of Flin Flon to be on evacuation alert.

A wildfire burning near Flin Flon is putting the city on high alert.

The City of Flin Flon posted on social media Tuesday night it has issued an evacuation pre-alert. This means residents are being asked to prepare for a potential evacuation, but at this point are not being ordered to leave.

The city says dry conditions and the location of wildfires are prompting the cautioning. Approximately 5,000 people live in the northern town.

The fire began at a landfill in Creighton, Sask., Monday and quickly spread east to forested areas, jumping the border Tuesday. Creighton is also on standby for a possible evacuation.

People were asked to ensure their vehicles are fuelled up and ready to travel and have important items such as documents, prescriptions, and personal items ready to go.

They were also asked to keep an eye on the city’s social media for updates.

The city is asking those who may need help in the case of an evacuation to register with city hall.

It also said an evacuation centre will be set up if needed.

Cliff Lake Road and Kisseynew Lake Road were closed Tuesday afternoon because of fire conditions.

The province said Tuesday afternoon it will have more details on this fire Wednesday.
