A new regulation-size basketball court has opened in Eaglewood Park, bringing a long-awaited recreational space to one of Winnipeg’s fastest-growing communities. “We are in the heart of Prairie Pointe at Eaglewood Park, opening a brand new basketball court on this very exciting basketball weekend in Winnipeg,” said Janice Lukes, councillor for Waverley West. The project was jointly funded by the federal government and the City of Winnipeg. “This is actually a funding partnership between the city and the federal government,” said Terry Duguid, MP for Winnipeg South. “This is the fastest growing part of Winnipeg. Very diverse community … but the services haven’t kept up.” The court is designed to host tournaments and league games, with input from local organizers. “We worked with our local Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association convener … to ensure that everything is just right,” Lukes said. The federal government contributed $213,000 through the Canada Community Building Fund, while the city provided the remaining $62,000, according to the city’s media release. “The new court provides youth and families a great place to stay active for years to come,” Duguid said in a media release. “Projects like this help strengthen our neighbourhoods and make a real difference in the lives of Winnipeggers.” Lukes told CTV News that more recreation infrastructure is planned. “Next year, we’re doing the sod turning for our new $100 million rec campus with indoor basketball courts, indoor volleyball courts,” Lukes added. Duguid commended the partnership between federal and municipal government in a positive way. “Good things happen when governments work together … The next most valuable player in the National Basketball League might come from our community right here in Prairie Pointe.”
