Demolition work continues at Portage Place building

A 122-year-old clock that stood inside Portage Place has been removed and placed in storage.

Progress continues to be made on the transformation of the former Portage Place mall.

Heavy equipment, including an ultra-high demolition excavator, was observed working on the open space between the two sides of the mall

Sean Kavanagh, senior director of strategic communications with True North, said crews are working to remove the above-grade structure of the old building, with demolition currently targeted to be finished by the spring.

True North Real Estate Development purchased Portage Place Mall in 2024, with plans to redevelop the land into housing, a Healthcare Centre of Excellence and the new home for expanded Pan Am Clinic programs.

Kavanagh said construction on the Healthcare Centre of Excellence is expected to begin later this year.
