Councillor puts motion forward for city to consider funding Dakota Community Centre expansion

The expansion of the Dakota Community Centre in St. Vital is receiving a $7.5 million boost from Ottawa.

A Winnipeg city councillor has put forward a motion for the city to consider funding the expansion of a city community centre in the next budget.

Coun. Markus Chambers (St. Norbert-Seine River) has put forward a motion to the Riel Community Committee, asking for the city to consider funding the expansion of the Dakota Community Centre.

The centre received a commitment of $7.5 million from the federal government in December.

Chambers’ motion said the St. Vital facility is regularly at capacity, and many people are on waitlists for programs.

The proposed upgrades would include a third indoor rink, more play areas for children, a fitness centre and more parking stalls.

The matter will be discussed Thursday when the committee meets. If it’s successful, it would clear the way for council to consider the funding through the budget review process.
