Now that the heart of the summer season is here, brace yourself for heat and humidity over the next several days in Winnipeg, Brandon and much of southern Manitoba. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a yellow warning Friday for heat for the Red River Valley and southwestern Manitoba. In Winnipeg, daytime highs will hover close to 30 C with humidex values in the upper 30s on Friday, though the weekend and well into next week. Overnight lows close to 20 C won’t bring much relief during that stretch either. Meanwhile, thunderstorms roared across southern Manitoba on Friday morning. Skies across the region will clear out and the temperatures will heat up in the afternoon as the storms move east into northwestern Ontario. The storms in the south were triggered by a trough associated with a low over northern Manitoba. As the trough continues to move east, another round of thunderstorms, potentially severe, is possible in the southeast Friday afternoon or evening. It’s not a certainty, but the threat is there. Meanwhile, the low in the north brought showers which helped to end air quality warnings, at least for now. ECCC said showers and thunderstorms will continue until the system moves east into Ontario on Friday afternoon. According to the weather agency, 10-20 mm of rainfall is expected in the northeast on Friday, with higher amounts up to 60 mm possible in thunderstorms.
