A low pressure system crossing Manitoba is bringing wintry weather across the province Thursday.

The leading warm front is sending afternoon temperatures back up above the freezing mark in Winnipeg and across southern regions.

While temperatures are rising, light snow and flurries are falling in strong and gusty northwest winds.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said the heaviest axis of snow associated with the low passed through northern Manitoba overnight. Still, light snow will continue across the region Thursday afternoon and tonight.

At the same time, cold air associated with the system is spreading south Thursday, causing daytime temperatures to fall in the north.

ECCC said the low will move into Ontario Thursday evening. The northwest regions of the province will see flurries Thursday afternoon and tonight.

In Manitoba, blowing snow is expected to develop overnight across much of the province, particularly in the north.

Most of Manitoba will see flurries Friday, as afternoon temperatures fall in many regions, including Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson.

As the low moves off, an Arctic high will move in, bringing a very cold start to the weekend on Saturday. Daytime high temperatures in the -20s will be closer to normal overnight lows for mid-January.
