Colleen Bready’s Forecast: What is in store for the Labour Day weekend?

Almost all of Manitoba is hot and sunny on Friday, leading into a scorching Labour Day long weekend.

An upper ridge of high pressure over Western Canada continues to bring stable conditions to the province.

All of southern Manitoba and most northern regions will soar to daytime highs Friday in the upper 20s and low 30s.

Conditions will be drastically different this afternoon in the Churchill and York regions, with intermittent fog midday, cloudy skies, strong north winds and temperatures falling to around 11 C.

With the rest of the north contending with hot highs and warm overnight lows, Environment and Climate Change Canada said it could be necessary to issue heat warnings, similar to those in effect west of Manitoba.

The Labour Day long weekend will get off to a similarly hot start on Saturday, with forecast highs around the province shooting up into the upper 20s and low 30s with sunshine or a mix of sun and clouds.

Expect more of the same on Sunday in the south. In the north, temperatures will continue to soar, but there is a good chance of showers across the northwest. Showers will move east into Thompson and Island Lake on Labour Day Monday.

Monday will be another warm day, with temperatures in the upper 20s in the south, well above normal for this time of year.

Since Labour Day is also the first day of September, it marks the start of meteorological fall, the months of September, October, and November.

Beyond the long weekend, there will be much more of a fall feel in the air, with lower temperatures in the upper teens starting Tuesday.
