Colleen Bready’s forecast: The temperature rollercoaster continues

We continue to ride a temperature rollercoaster on Wednesday in Manitoba, with more twists and turns to come in the hours and days ahead.

The eastern side of the province, including Winnipeg, and northwestern Ontario will bask in sunshine Wednesday.

Temperatures will be considerably colder than we’ve become used to recently. Daytime highs will only reach the mid-minus teens in the south, but those are normal mid-January temperatures.

Western regions closer to Saskatchewan will be cloudier Wednesday, ahead of the next low pressure system that’s on its way from the Northwest Territories.

A warm front associated with the low will push into Manitoba tonight, causing temperatures to rise overnight.

Snow will fall first in the north Wednesday evening before spreading into Winnipeg, the southeast and northwestern Ontario late tonight.

Warmer air will also bring a limited risk of freezing rain tonight in western regions.

Snow will spread into the southwest Thursday morning, as it continues to fall across the rest of the province.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says 10-15 cm of total snowfall is possible in the north, while amounts are expected to be much less in the south, closer to 2-4 cm.

Daytime highs will climb above freezing in the south Thursday, but that won’t last long. Strong and gusty north winds will send much cold air south.

Snow will continue Friday across much of the province but will taper off.

Next up, an Arctic high will bring much colder conditions Saturday. Winnipeg is forecast to reach just -23 C, one degree above the normal overnight low for mid-January.
