Manitoba weather: More snow and slippery conditions expected for province

Another cold day comes to a close in Winnipeg.

The forecast is on the naughty list Monday to start off this holiday week, with more snow and slippery conditions expected across southern Manitoba. But much nicer conditions are on the way by Christmas Day.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said an incoming disturbance is expected to bring a widespread snowfall to the province, with 2-5 cm possible over a 24-hour period. Central Manitoba will see the most, with 8-12 cm of snowfall possible.

Watch out for ice pellets mixing with snow Monday afternoon across southern Manitoba, including in Winnipeg and Brandon. That means roads and highways could get another polish, after already slippery conditions over the last few days.

Temperature will vary across the south Monday, with the coldest temperatures in the southwest, only reaching the mid-minus teens. Daytime highs will be a few degrees higher in the Red River Valley and in the minus single digits further east.

Snow will also reach parts of northern Manitoba on Monday. The highest amounts are expected to fall around Flin Flon and The Pas, where 5-10 cm is forecast this afternoon.

Snow will taper off from west to east across the province Monday night.

Meanwhile, ECCC has issued a yellow warning for cold for northern areas including Lynn Lake, Brochet, Tadoule Lake, Pukatawagan and Leaf Rapids. After frigid wind chill values in the -45 to -50 range this morning, there will be some modest moderation today. But extreme wind chills are expected to return Monday and Tuesday nights.

It will be a cold journey for Santa and his reindeer after they leave the North Pole and cross northern regions later this week, but temperatures in the south will ease up around the holidays.

Winnipeg is forecast to reach -13 C under a mix of sun and cloud on Christmas Eve on Wednesday, while above normal temperatures around -7 C are expected with cloudy skies on Christmas Day on Thursday.
