As temperatures soar in southern Manitoba Thursday, parts of the north are bracing for a significant soaking. Daytime highs across the south, including Winnipeg and Brandon, are expected to reach the mid- to upper 20s, under a mix of sun and cloud. Strong and gusty south winds will help to tap into the summertime heat. Conditions are similar in northwestern Ontario Thursday, just not quite as warm. Still, afternoon temperatures in the low 20s are still unseasonably high for early September. Meanwhile, an approaching low pressure system is expected to spread showers, thunderstorms and, eventually, heavy rain across northern Manitoba starting Thursday afternoon. Showers, and possibly thunderstorms, will spread first this afternoon across northwestern and north-central areas before heavy rain is expected to start this evening, mainly in the northeast. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a yellow warning for rainfall for the Tadoule Lake, Churchill and York regions. The weather agency said heavy rain is expected in northern Manitoba beginning this evening, adding 25-40 mm is expected by the time rain becomes light on Friday afternoon. ECCC also warns that parks and forests will likely sustain some damage and that landslides are possible in vulnerable areas such as steep slopes, deforested areas or recent burn scars.
