Colleen Bready’s forecast: Cool temperatures, but weather settling

Snow is out and sunshine is in on Thursday in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.

A low pressure system that brought snow to southern Manitoba on Wednesday has moved into Ontario on Thursday.

A large arctic high is now building over the eastern Prairies, bringing cool but more settled weather, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

In other words, high pressure is keeping the sky clear, the sun shining, and temperatures several degrees below normal for this time of year in southern Manitoba in strong and gusty north winds.

For perspective, Winnipeg is forecast to reach a sunny high of just -8 C, while temperatures should reach closer to 3 C by late March.

Daytime highs will climb slightly higher in northwestern Ontario on Thursday, closer to -5 C.

Clouds will overtake the sunshine in southwestern Manitoba late Thursday afternoon, ahead of a new disturbance on the way from the southern Alberta foothills.

Don’t expect a wintry wallop, though – by the time the disturbance crosses southern Manitoba overnight, it will only leave a light dusting of flurries behind.

Meanwhile, much of northern Manitoba will see a mix of sun and clouds on Thursday. Forecast daytime highs range from -10 C in The Pas and Flin Flon to -18 C in Churchill.

Conditions will remain quiet overnight across the north, with partly cloudy skies and a low chance of sporadic flurries.

Temperatures will remain unseasonably cool on Friday in Winnipeg before rising back up above the freezing mark over the weekend in the sunshine.
