Bitter cold continues to hold its firm grip on Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on Friday – and it won’t be letting go soon.

Orange warnings for cold, issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), continue for most of Manitoba on Friday, except for the Churchill region and parts of neighbouring Shamattawa region along the Hudson Bay coast.

The same warning is in effect across northwestern Ontario on Friday where conditions are the same on the eastern side of the provincial border.

Temperatures in Winnipeg and the rest of the southeast will only reach around -25 C on Friday, while the southwest will be even colder with highs struggling to reach the upper -20s. Wind chill values will feel as cold as the -40s.

Cold comfort, perhaps, but the sun is shining across the south under surface high pressure.

It will be similarly sunny on Friday afternoon across most of northern Manitoba, with highs in the minus upper -20s and low -30s.

But wait, there’s more - conditions will get even worse before they get better.

Overnight lows will be even colder on Friday and Saturday nights, particularly in the south, plummeting to the mid, even upper -30s.

We will feel much welcomed relief on Monday, with much more tolerable winter daytime highs in the mid-minus teens in the south and under the sunshine.
