Manitoba weather: What’s on the way for the weekend

Friday is the kind of day you wish you could trade your shoes or boots for skates - roads and sidewalks are like an ice rink.

The slippery conditions in Winnipeg are thanks to several hours of freezing drizzle that fell overnight into Friday morning.

That said, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has ended a freezing drizzle advisory for the city and the Red River Valley.

The alert continues Friday afternoon for the rest of the southeast and northwestern Ontario.

Freezing drizzle and light snow dotting both sides of the border is courtesy of a low pressure trough. As it moves into Ontario, colder air will bring an end to the freezing drizzle.

Strong and gusty northwest winds will also whip up Friday afternoon across the south as the disturbance continues to moves east and out of the region.

Southern daytime highs will reach between -7 C and -5 C on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, much of northern Manitoba will see sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud on Friday afternoon, though scattered flurries are also possible.

With the exception of the communities furthest north, daytime highs will be similar to the south. Some areas, including The Pas and Flin Flon, will reach even milder highs close to the freezing mark.

The weekend will bring much warmer temperatures to the south. Winnipeg is forecast to reach around 3 C on Saturday and Sunday.

Expect some sunshine, at times, but also the possibility of showers or wet snow.
