City to spray for elm bark beetles

The City of Winnipeg will resume the Elm Bark Beetle Control Program.

The program is intended to control elm bark beetles that carry Dutch Elm Disease.

“Treatment will be conducted using Pyrate EC (Chlorpyrifos), a chemical product, which is sprayed from portable sprayers directly onto the lower 50 centimetres of the tree trunk,” said the city’s Insect Control Branch in a news release.

The city will spray between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday until the fall.

The Elm Bark Beetle Control Program will resume, weather permitting, in the following areas:

Insect Management Area 5 (Chalmers, Glen Elm)

Insect Management Area 47 (Luxton, St. John’s Park)

Insect Management Area 50 (Kildonan Park, Seven Oaks)
