Is there a way to improve pedestrian safety at an intersection in the city’s southwest? That’s what one city councillor is wanting to know after filing a new motion with the Assiniboia Community Committee. Coun. Janice Lukes (Waverley West) is asking for the intersection of Bison Drive and Markham Road to be reviewed to see if any improvements can be made. Her motion states the intersection is a busy crossing, as there are kids who attend the nearby Chancellor School, there are a number of multi-family properties nearby, and the Superstore brings a lot of people to the area. “I don’t know what they’ll come up with. But even painting it up, maybe we’ve got flashing lights when they cross,” said Lukes Monday. Her motion is asking the Public Works Committee to direct the Public Service to study the traffic lights, timing and turn signals at the intersection, as well as review collision data from MPI, and figure out how pedestrian safety can be enhanced. The committee will discuss the motion on Sept. 4.
