Two candidates running for Winnipeg city council are raising concerns after their campaign signs were vandalized. Posters for Nafiya Naso and Jasmine Brar, who are both running in the Waverley West ward, were hit with graffiti. The vandalism included scribbles over their faces and derogatory words. It also featured a graffiti tag that has been seen repeatedly in the neighbourhood over the last two years. In an interview on Sunday, Brar said she found the graffiti “disturbing.” She added she’s upset this happened not only to her, but to her fellow candidate. “This election is a competition, it’s not a war,” Brar said. “Every sign that gets vandalized, no matter if it’s mine or somebody else’s, it is wrong.” Naso said the incident highlights issues about intimidation, racism, and the environment created for people taking part in the democratic process. “I do not stand for this. This has no place in Waverley West or in Winnipeg. Period,” she said.” All the damaged signs are being replaced, and a police report has been filed.
