The Ottawa Police Service is increasing patrols at synagogues and Jewish community locations across Ottawa following a shooting outside a synagogue in Belleville. The Special Investigations Unit is investigating a shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville Sunday evening. The SIU said a Belleville police officer was outside the synagogue when there was an “exchange of gunfire” with a man armed with a rifle. In a statement, the Ottawa Police Service said there was “no information indicating a specific threat to the Ottawa community connected to this incident.” “We know this incident may be felt deeply by many people, regardless of where it occurred,” police said on social media. “We recognize that this incident has understandably raised concerns and may leave some feeling shaken, vulnerable, or fearful as, at the time of the shooting, members of the Jewish community were gathering to observe one of the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur.” The Ottawa Police Service said its thoughts are with the Jewish community, the injured police officer and “all those affected by the shooting.” “We will have an increased police presence and patrols at synagogues and Jewish community locations across Ottawa. We are maintaining close contact with community partners, faith leaders, and organizations to remain informed of concerns and provide support where needed,” police said. “We will continue to monitor developments closely and adjust our policing response as necessary. Everyone should be able to worship, gather, and celebrate their faith and culture without fear. Acts of violence, threats, and intimidation have no place in our community.” Police are asking anyone who sees something suspicious or concerning to report it to police.
