Brandon police officer facing assault charge after arrest of youth last summer

BRANDON — A Brandon police officer has been charged with assault on a youth at a high school.

Manitoba’s police watchdog says the charge relates to an arrest last June 10 when police responded to reports of someone with an edged weapon who was, in their words, “out of control.”

The suspect was arrested after being hit with a stun gun, but investigators say the alleged assault occurred after that, sending the suspect to hospital.

Government officials would not confirm if this event was related to a takedown that day at Neelin High School.

On that same day, a 16-year-old was arrested for attacking another student with a sword at the school, resulting in the victim getting injured in the chest, forearms, hands and thighs.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba says Const. Darren Shewchuk has been charged with one count of assault.
