Blowing snow to cause dangerous driving in parts of Manitoba

Blowing snow is expected to make travel dangerous for parts of Manitoba on Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a yellow advisory – blowing snow for areas in the Lake Winnipeg South Basin and adjacent shore regions.

The weather agency explains that a cold front surging south through Manitoba will bring northwest winds between 60 and 80 km/h starting on Wednesday morning. These winds combined with light snow will cause blowing snow and areas of near-zero visibility throughout the day. Conditions are expected to improve by Wednesday evening.

ECCC warns that blowing snow will likely make travel hazardous. It urges Manitobans to consider postponing non-essential travel and to try to stay indoors.

Cold warning issued in the north

ECCC has also issued an orange warning – cold for parts of northern Manitoba including Brochet and Tadoule Lake.

According to the weather agency, a cold and windy air mass is moving into Manitoba, bringing with it chilly temperatures and wind chill values in the -45 to -50 range. Though wind chills may improve during the daytime, they are expected to drop below -45 each night for the next few days.

ECCC notes that cold weather puts everyone at risk and recommends covering up and dressing warmly.
