‘All of us are going to miss him’: Vigil to remember Gabe Beardy

People pay respects to a man fatally struck by a vehicle earlier this week on Henderson Highway.

Hundreds of people gathered at the intersection of Henderson Highway and Neil Avenue in Winnipeg Friday evening, to remember a “great guy that left way too early.”

Gabriel (Gabe) Beardy, a 32-year-old who was a member of Lake St. Martin First Nation, was killed in a motor vehicle collision on April 19. A northbound vehicle hit him around 5:20 a.m. that day.

The Friday vigil brought people carrying flowers and signs, temporarily blocking the road.

On Friday, Gabe’s uncle, Brad Beardy, described Gabe as a “great kid” who left the family too early.

“All my family in the community is devastated by the loss of Gabe. He was all around a great kid, a smile on his face all the time,” Brad said on Friday.

“I am going to miss this young man. All of us are going to miss him. The community of Lake St. Martin is going to miss him.”

Family spokesperson Hilary Beardy told CTV News on Tuesday that he was a devoted father of four who loved to joke around.

Winnipeg police previously said the driver called 911 and remained on scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Brad suggested reducing the speed limit.

“Reduce the speed just before the crosswalk, similar to what they do at a school zone – just for that section of the pedestrian crossing.”
