The University of Windsor is giving the former Greyhound bus depot site back to the city, ending a long-standing downtown redevelopment plan. The university says the plan for a downtown campus didn’t move ahead as expected and rising costs for upkeep and security makes the site hard to justify keeping. The land at University Avenue East and Freedom Way was originally transferred back in 2011 as part of a bigger downtown development plan that also included the Windsor Armouries. But complications, including the fact the site sits above the Windsor-Detroit tunnel, limited what could actually be built there. In total, the university says it has spent about $75,000 on assessments and another $20,000 a year just to maintain and secure the property.
