Suspected homicide being investigated in Windsor

Windsor had its first suspected homicide of the year on Wednesday outside of the Met Campus hospital. CTV Windsor’s Chris Campbell has the details.

Windsor police are investigating a suspected homicide after a man was found suffering from a fatal injury.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the Windsor Regional Hospital’s Metropolitan Campus on Lens Avenue, where it was reported an unconscious man who suffered a fatal injury was located in the parking lot.

Police say the victim was brought to the emergency department, where he was later pronounced dead. He has since been identified as a 44-year-old Windsor resident.

Const. Andie Suthers said there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

“At this time, there’s no risk to public safety,” Suthers said, adding that police will notify the community if that assessment changes. She said the investigation remains in its early stages.

The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the case — the first homicide investigation of the year in Windsor.

Suthers described the unit as a specialized team trained to handle serious offences and said investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness statements as part of what she called an “intense investigation.”

Police would not say whether the incident appears to have been random or targeted.

“We don’t have that information at this time yet,” Suthers said.

“We have to have that balance of being transparent with the public, keeping everyone informed, but also protecting the integrity of the investigation.”

Investigators are appealing for video from the area, including residential surveillance and dash-camera footage recorded around the time of the incident. Police say hospital video will also be reviewed.
