Over 100 conductors hope to lead Windsor Symphony Orchestra

The music director spot has over 100 people from around the world hoping to secure the gig.

More than 100 conductors from around the world are hoping to be chosen as the next music director for the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

The search began in December following the death of longtime maestro Robert Franz. He led the orchestra from 2023 until he passed in September 2025.

Candidates from Argentina, Australia, Germany, Ukraine, the U.S., and the Netherlands are in contention. Around 20 per cent of applicants are Canadian and 15 per cent are women.

“Our hope is that the community comes out to see all the prospective candidates and lets us know their thoughts as well,” said Deborah Severs, past board chair.

Shortlisted candidates will rehearse with the WSO for a week, then conduct a concert this season. A new director is expected to be chosen for next season.
