How to deal with extreme heat

Here are some tips when dealing with extreme heat.

If you are struggling with the heat in the region, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has some tips on staying cool, as heat-related illnesses can happen quick.

Here’s ways to prevent illness:

• Drink lots of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat and lightweight, loose-fitting clothes
• Take a cool bath or shower
• Limit outside activities to when it’s the coolest outside
• Don’t leave anyone or any pets in parked cars
• Make regular visits to friends and family on hot days, in case they need help
• If you don’t have a working air conditioner, find an air-conditioned spot nearby to cool off

The Windsor Police Service also warned that fines and penalties can be issued in the following circumstances:

• Leaving pets or kids in a hot car, even if the windows are slightly open
• Failing to give your pets water or shade outside
• Outdoor work or construction without proper safety measures to keep employees safe from heat risks
• Ignoring vulnerable people
