Essex County OPP officers are investigating the theft of a significant historical artifact from St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Tecumseh. Officers were called to the property in the 12000 block of Tecumseh Road East for the investigation. Police say sometime between Nov. 6 and Nov. 8 a cross was stolen from the Tecumseh Historical Museum. Officials at the Diocese of London told CTV News Windsor that St. Anne’s Catholic Church acquired the historic cast iron cross in 1873. It was donated in 2018 to the Tecumseh Historical Museum. Officials said due to the weight of the cross it would require two individuals to move the cross. A similar incident happened at St. Peter’s cemetery in London. The stolen items were returned by the owner of a scrap metal yard after the theft was reported on CTV News. Officials hope for a similar result in this theft. “It’s not just a decorative piece,” said Steven Duguay, OPP. “It holds a lot of sentimental value to members of our community.”
